New city, the words sends quivers down the spine. Filled with fear and excitement, it’s a journey of discovering the new. While the people define the new culture, they also have a profound impact on the bond you will make with this city. Familiarising with different ways and different lifestyles can be a challenging task.

One of the many joys of being an introvert is the absolute negligence towards interaction altogether. But you have to face it, the city isn’t going anywhere and you have to survive. Well, we are here to help you grasp all your “new city” moments and make best out of it.

We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths. -Walt Disney

  1. BE YOU-NIQUE: Never let your real personality fade away to become a part of any group. People around you will value you for who you are and the uniqueness you possess. Creating bonds by flattery and ‘going with the flow’ can never make a healthy relationship. So ‘being yourself’ is the key to attract the right friends.
  1. EVERYONE IS WORTH IT: From neighbours to classmates to colleagues, everyone comes in your life for a reason. Interact with anyone and everyone around you! Everyone deserves a chance in this new city. It’s a new start so keep a smile and talk. Don’t anticipate, just participate.
  1. GO SOLO: In the new city, it is evident that you might not find the right people to hang out with at your college or place of work in the beginning. So, go alone to places of your interest. Join a hobby or routine class or attend a different open programme for that’s where you will find like-minded people.

  1. LET’S PLAN IT OUT: “Hey wanna go have some pizza?” Take every opportunity to socialise. The more time you give to people, more you get to discover. Plan different outings with small groups around you. Go for city tour or day visits within the city, instead of just parties.
  1. NO JUDGEMENT PLEASE: People come with flaws and stories you can’t even think of. The most commonly said words ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’ imply for people around you. Judgments restrict you from being open to new experiences and in a new city all that you explore counts.

Be patient, as much as you need your time and space to adjust to all the new things that come your way. You are also new to others and it will take time to make your presence in their life seem natural. Remember, Keep calm and love the city because it’s going to love you back.

It’s not only moving that creates new starting points. Sometimes all it takes is a subtle shift in perspective, an opening of the mind, an intentional pause and reset, or a new route to start to see new options and new possibilities. –Kristin Armstrong
