Do you hate it when your alarm goes off on Monday mornings or on any other day of the working week for that matter? Does the word ‘work’ conjure depressing images in your mind? If the answer is yes, it is safe to say that you hate your job. However, for most people, switching jobs might not be an option. Some don’t job hop because they don’t have much experience. Some others choose not to because they don’t want the short work period to look bad on their resume, Whatever the reason may be, the fact remains that you spend 40-50 hours a week at your workplace. It is for this reason that you need to stop sulking and find happiness at work.

Wondering how to stay positive in a place you don’t like? Read on!

1. Treat yourself from time-to-time

When you meet a deadline or complete a project successfully, give yourself a reward. Whether it is treating yourself to a 20-minute break or ordering your favourite dessert, make sure you give yourself something to look forward to. This way, you’ll be motivated to complete tasks and you’ll not feel disgruntled throughout the day.

2. Learn a new skill

If you hate your current job, why not commit to learning a new skill to take on a future career that you will love? By focusing your energy on developing a new skill, you will have less time to hate your current job. There are several platforms like Udemy and Unacademy that provide free online courses. Enroll for a course that interest you. For instance, did you always want to pursue photography? If yes, you can sign up for a photography course online. If the course you are interested in can help you in your current role, ask your employer to send you to a seminar or pay for an online course.

3. Build relationships with coworkers

Instead of sulking at your desk for 8 hours, move around your office and chat up your colleagues. Any work environment becomes fun if you’re friendly with your coworkers. Find trustworthy people you can talk to, but keep the discussions polite and respectful. Don’t indulge in office gossip and don’t get too personal with a colleague. For instance, you don’t need to know every detail about a colleague’s personal life or even the names of their children! Having a friendly community at work will help you stay positive and reduce stress levels!

4. Decorate your work space

Imagine staring at a blank wall all day! Now, imagine looking at a frame of your pet dog which is placed right next to some really cool stationery. I’m sure you get the drift! Whether you have a desk, a cubicle, or an entire office to yourself, decorate your workplace to make it more ‘you’. Check with your seniors to see what kind of decorations are allowed. Even something as small as using your own coffee mug instead of a Styrofoam cup will make your work space more homely.

This can include something as simple as having a coffee machine! Make gratitude a part of your daily routine and see a shift in mentality like never before.

Why it may seem like you can’t leave your job soon enough, implementing the above-mentioned tips will help you stay positive while you’re still working there. The sooner you realise it’s not worth spending one-third of your life sulking, the easier it will be for you to find happiness at work.
